Course Overview

What is Organizational Behaviour

Challenges to our modern businesses that require enterprises to be more effective in how they structure their operations

A lot of the stress effecting companies comes from the intense competitive environment and fast advances in the technological environment and a very diverse social-cultural environment
- in addition to these stresses, enterprises also have the challenge of dealing with all these things under incredible time pressure - which is a further requirement for understanding "OB" concepts

7. Motivation
 ..../marketing/motivation.htm
Discussion - Why is motivation important in the context of increasing employee productivity in an intense globally competitive environment constantly challenged by fast paced technological changes.

Historically, people have approached motivation with a carrot or stick approach.
- if the person accepts urging to do something they will be rewarded, the carrot,
- or they will accept urging cause if they do not take steps, you'll beat them with a stick so they will be "motivated" out of fear.

Theoretical perspectives on Motivation
Taylor - the idea of studyng workers to find the most efficient ways of doing things and then teaching other workers those techniques
Mayo - assumed that employees want to feel useful
- social needs more important than money in motivating employees
Maslow - Maslow's "hierarchy of needs"
Job Enrichment Theory - emphasizes motivating the worker through the job itself.
McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y
Theory X Assumes most people dislike work, workers must therefore be controlled, punished, disciplined, threatened
Theory Y Assumes most people like to work, people naturally work towards goals
