common interview questions
- generated 2018 Oct 30/31 by students in CAP506
- in 2019 we will add to this list some additional questions,
and try to ascertain what would be examples of good answers

tell me about yourself

- hobbies - shows you are well rounded
- companies also like to have their employees to "public events", like fund raising for cancer
- large companies often have PR events and want to know if you are the kind of person who would do that, like Dragon Boat races

- strengths

- past work experience, which allows you to boast about things you accomplished

- things you do which involve other people - especially different people

Where do you see yourself in 5 years

- it is interesting to get new responsibsibiltiies so I can apply myself to new areas of work

What makes you ideal for the job

- how you can learn new stuff quickly

- my values and experience fits the company's values and mission statement

what are your weaknesses

- explain them in terms of you being more careful, or taking more time

Why do you want to work here

- depends on the company
- they are trying to "measure" your motivation or interest

- maybe you can say you like the company's product, and you use it
- you can also mention something good about the company you read in a newspaper or magazine article
 - that shows (1) you keep up to date on the news (2) you researched about the company in advance

Why do you want to work here - a related question "Why should we hire you"

- tell your strengths  in the context of their core activities
- you find out the core activities by gong through the company annual report

Tell me what you know about the company

- the answer is in reading the company annual report

What were some problems in your previous job
(also Describe the work atmosphere at your previous company)

- yes, a lot of people had problems with the new IT system because they were not trained - can you please tell me how your company trains new employees

Describe a tough decision you had to make

- list everything that would be effected, and I spoke to everyone involved, so that when I made the decision, I minimized the chances of failure

Do you have any questions for us,

- rhetorical question
- this is where you get to "close" the interview

- example,
I noticed that your V.P. Marketing gave a speech in Ottawa 3 weeks aho in which she talked about expanding more into Latin America..I speaks Spanish and was wondering how soon the expansion plans will begin, and if I could contribute

So, by asking the question this way you prove
1. you did good research on the company
2. you paid attention to future things they are doing
3. you related their future plans to one of your skills
4. you showed you are a "team player" by offering to help do this
