(updated 2005 Oct 02)
This Debate gives students the opportunity to participate in class in a more actively, and allow the chance to earn marks three ways 1. contributing suggestions to the topics we will debate
2. talking in class during the debate
3. following up with emails after the debate about any additional points
.
In order to have a debate, one needs some contentious issues, some things about which you could agree, and disagree. In the columns below are contributions from students about some of the things they wish to argue.
It is a good thing that ...
It is a bad thing that ...
Music - Downloading
"People who use file-sharing networks to obtain music at no charge over the Internet are more likely to have increased their spending on music than are average online music fans. Why? Mainly because they have the
access to listen to various ammounts of music, freely, and be able to narrow down who they like and buy that artists product."

"I have found the following site about the pros and cons of file -sharing" go to

Music - Downloading
"People who download music off the internet [without paying] are, in a way, stealing from the artists who created the music. Artists put in a lot of time and energy to create their music, and it is unfair to them that people can
download their music for free without paying them for all their hard efforts."

contributed by  Zev Ilmer

"I believe that illegal music sharing will continue to rise because many users are still not aware of the serious consequences. There will always be users on the
Internet that will continue to believe any information being traded on their computer screens is cost free."

Credit Cards

"Credit Cards an easier way for consumer to purchase products online. Consumers don't have to leave their house to purchase goods"
contributed by Damien Daniel

"people have the convenience to do research at home and find the most competitive prices.  It is less of a hassle to look for a few websites that offer the same product, as opposed to looking for the same product in a few
different stores."
contributed by Annie Fung

Credit Cards

"Due to hackers, fraud, security issues; people don't like to use their credit cards on the net. There is a threat of new types of payment system over the internet, companies may lose business over the net"

teachers

the internet is good, it can replace some functions of teachers

"I feel that computers should replace teachers because it would save both student and the teacher's time and would be less expensive.  Students and teacher's can meet through video conferences and online interaction with students.  All contact and information can be sent and received through the internet."

teachers

It is a bad thing if we use computers too much cause we need to train teachers to a very advanced level. Computers will not replace teachers - actually what happens is teachers who use computers well, will replace teachers who do not know how to use computers !

suggested by Tim Richardson - in response to Srinivasamoorthy's suggestion

"inability of computers to develop higher order thinking, the physical problems that the extended use of computers bring…the social, personal and human contact that will be lost when computers, and not humans, deliver instruction.”
I believe that interacting with other people is important and is a good practice for when students look for a job and starts to tackle the workplace rather than isolating themselves from the crowd and having to sit  infront of their computer most of the time.

Viruses

"It is a good thing, human [sic] can use virus to get into their enemies computer, to mess up their computer system, without using weapons to get win. It saves the world and save people's life. "

It is a bad thing that.....Viruses-Hijack Modems
"A couple received a $1,700 phone bill from Verizon after a computer virus hijacked their computers and made long distance calls."

Banner Ads
"...are very useful for companies or businesses.  It’s a way
for them to advertise their products or services, which can increase sales.  Also, it’s a way to get people to remember the company’s name and expand product ideas to the viewers of the websites... especially if it’s a business that launched new products or services.

Banner Ads

"Banner Ads are bad at times because if you have a web-site for your business and you choose to have banner ads to increase your rankings, and you aren’t sure of what banner ads to put up, you may end up putting banners which may look good but as they change they may become offensive to your customers. For instance pornographic banner ads or ads that may in some way are misleading.".

contributed by Domonique Esther Van Sluytman

"Advertising is fine; we can live with it. But when sites plaster banners and 'sponsored links' all over their content and encourage you to CLICK HERE, my tolerance wears thin. Not only are ads annoying and distracting, they also slow the page right down."

contributed by Yu Zhao Li

Mass Marketing - Spam Mass Marketing - Spam
"Majority of the consumers that receive these ads hate them and delete them before even reading them. Also many consumers now use a junk-mail folder where most of the spam is sent to directly so they don't have to worry about sorting through good emails and spam."
contributed by Chris Papagapiou
Mass Marketing - Pop Ups
"it is a great method of advertising for a company as the
majority of the people are on the internet today and a pop up advertisement is something you would actually have to close on your own to get rid of so the chances of someone seeing your ad or promotion is really good."
contributed by  Waqas Mahmud
Mass Marketing - Pop Ups
"it can really annoy internet users and eventually if
someone sees a pop up too many times may just get annoyed and not even bother, and the bad rep can get passed around like as with spam these days where everyone just deletes the message without even looking at it. It could also drive people away from using the internet as in a time where people want to do things quick and be on their way, they don't want to be held up with pop ups coming up and slowing down their task."

Identity theft and online registration issues
"...it's a good thing when companies allow you to register online to become a member of their online members area. A company like Air miles allows you to check your statement and your most recent account updates online. which is good because it's convinient and saves time."

contributed by Francis Ho

Identity theft and online registration issues

"it's a bad thing when sites are not secure and people can see your information and of course ruin your life when they see your personal info. It's also bad in a way for the companies because with the growing concern of hackers and internet security, people are scared to put their personal info online and therefore the companies that spend the money doing online member stuff lose out because nobody registers."

Free Speech
Internet web sites can be used by different cultural groups to promote activities, events, understanding and connect people together around the world

"Mr.Sivaram was a senior  editorial broad member of Tamil net, which provides reliable and accurate  information on issues concerning the Tamil people VIA Internet. And in July,2005 this senior editor has been abducted and killed by some unknown people. I suggest we use the topic of "free speech" in our debate class to argue, whether a individual is entitled to have full "free speech" or if the government is entitled to impose restrictions on what it considers to be responsiable free speech. Thank you"
Christy Alfred

Free Speech- Hate
Racist groups can put up web sites under the guise of "free speech" and it is very difficult to shut them down
