ASEAN

from  2003 Oct 8

The ASEAN countries, as a group, are seeking to develop advantageous relations with other big players in the region such as India and China. Rather than individual countries in ASEAN trying to develop a trade agreement with , say, India, they find it more advantageous to do this in the context of a larger entity.

And, its not just the ASEAN countries that want to do this, the BIG FOUR also want to do business with ASEAN.

as evidenced by South Korea's President's comments

ASEAN

In addition to the comments expressed by ASEAN leaders and the leaders of the BIG FOUR about a trading entity in East-Asia, you have the wisdom of Toronto Star economics editor David Crane in an Oct 2003 piece discussing East-Asian growth in depth.

Crane repeats a quote "Europe is the past, U.S. is the present, Asia is the future"

. .

Crane suggests China is seeking trade agreements with almost everybody in the region and the consequence will be significant.
