Class Participation
Before we begin discussing the topics, understand that a big part of marks for this course is "class participation / contribution", which is mostly done by you making comments on the YouTube videos.
3 min 51 sec
When you make a comment, type in to the comment your first name, and class section (you do not need to put in your last name or student number)
Here is a video explanation, by screen capture video, of how to make comments on the YouTube videos. You can earn marks from the first week by making comments

The first class Wed morning did not go well, we lost internet and I was still coughing a lot, Wed afternoon class was not  much better. Thu class I was still coughing too much to speak clearly. We will see what happens Fri (Jan 14th)

But, as a "back up plan" I made this 9 min video Thu night Jan 13th to show you what we would have covered if we had a "normal" start. So, watch the video, then go to the site and click on and read / view the content indicated, and if you make any comments on the videos, it counts for class participation right away.

The idea is that you would "collect" stories over the course of your life and use these when you need to communicate something important.

The main purpose of business is to make money for the people who own the business.
All other objectives are secondary to achieving this goal
- it may sound heartless, but it is the essence of capitalism.

Why Companies get involved in International Business
There are 4 major operating objectives that may cause companies to develop International Business
   1  To expand sales
   2  To acquire resources
3  To diversify sources of sales
4  To diversify sources of supplies

launch an offensive into a new market before competitor does (eg. like Pepsi into Russia, before Coke)
power and prestige

did Fri Class SAA Jan 28
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDjXtQRe5uk&
'Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

There is available, in many sources (internet based and non-internet based) commentary criticizing the major corporations and leading nations in their drive for competitiveness.

This drive for competitiveness (through harvesting practices) has created vulnerable situations for

  • water management
    • (river and lakes drying up)
  • agriculture
    • soil erosion (caused by large scale mining and tree harvesting)
    • soil depletion requiring excessive use of fertilizers and other chemicals
  • metals and mining
    • rare metals such as Cobalt are being dug out and used for advanced smartphones - and the mining of such minerals has large effects on the land and wildlife where these mines are located, such as the jungles of the Congo where gorillas live
  • forestry
    • trees being cut down at a rate faster than replanting and regrowth
    • large forest fires effect safety for people livingf close, and smoke and ash clouds effect health of people living in the region
It is hard to be objective on this issue since some people claim we have reached a point in the history of the planet where the existence of the human species is at risk!! The topic of sustainable development, has become increasingly "public" as a news topic and therefore important for students in international business

The Political / Legal / Regulatory Environment can be simply described as the laws and regulations that business has to follow in order to make sure the business owners do not get arrested, or have the business fined for noncompliance of some regulation.

Laws are made by politicians - who enact these laws based on the likelihood they will get re-elected. The  political environment is affected and effected by politicians who in turn are influenced by changes and challenges in the social - cultural enviromment (languages, ethnicity, immigration etc.), challenges in the economic enviromment (currency exchange rates, corporate activity, unemployment rates) and also to some extent the geographic environment in terms of how the region is laid out, rivers, mountains, proximity to other countries, weather, seasons etc.

overall intro to contingency planning

Successful International Business Management is based on solving problems.

If there were not a lot of  problems, you wouldn't need managers - but because there are lots of problems, you need managers to
- analyze the problem,
- craft a solution, and
- monitor how the solution is carried out.

Part of being a successful Int' Business Manager (especially after 9/11 and Covid19) is recognizing that risk and threat situations effect int'l business in many ways, and, these situations  have to be dealt with, and "managed", or your company will be compromised and subsequently uncompetitive.

In November of 2021 a number of well known newspapers around the world began their story of the flooding in B.C. with words similar to "As climate change intensifies, extreme events are becoming more frequent and more damaging. Canada is ...".

It is suggested (WTGR) that a different way of seeing this problem is not to look at climate change, but rather to look at human population change - more specifically the change in "where" humans are moving to work, and life.

"I am  not a climatologist, but I wonder if the problem is not a suspected increase in climate "events", but rather a problem of millions of people around the world moving from rural areas, to large cities, as "economic refugees", not climate refugees - resulting in a large increase in the number of people being effected by a flood, hurricane, earthquake etc." WTGR Nov 2021

Pitfalls of Exporting

Potential Disadvantages of Exporting
(Pitfalls of Exporting)
did  Wed SDD Apr 13
did Wed SBB Apr 13
for Thu SCC Apr 14
---    Fri  SAA Apr 15 no class on Fri Apr 15th
Why would you discuss Disadvantages of Exporting in a course which spends most of the time discussing how to export?

Answer: because the course (MRK460, MGSC44, IBM600) is not, strictly speaking, "how to export".

Sometimes managers need to make decisions about whether to pursue a new situation, or not: what we call a GO - NO GO decision.

For the purposes of saving money and running the company efficiently, sometimes it is better to NOT GO - that is to say NOT export because the cost might be too high, or you may be consuming resources you don't have - it might be better to concentrate on making money on your "regular" business.

Deciding NOT to export doesn't mean your company is not involved in international business

  • you can still be involved in importing, directly, or indirectly
    • and therefore international business circumstances (currency fluctuations, political risk etc.) will still effect you
  • you may be manufacturing a device that depends on a supplier being able to manufacture a sub-component in a global region that becomes risky
    • the sub-component could be identified by a foreign government as a target for tariffs which may effect your production cost

witiger.com/internationalbusiness/LCs.htm
did  Wed SDD Apr 13
for Wed SBB Apr 13
for Thu SCC Apr 14
---    Fri  SAA Apr 15 no class on Fri Apr 15th

The subject of LCs is not normally something you would teach in a general overview course on Global Marketing and Business  - but for some people who are interested in actually becoming involved in exporting and importing, LCs are a necessary thing which you must understand..

Common Problems with Letters of Credit
One of the things that is important for students of management to understand about business and international business is that the "real world" very seldom operates as precisely as the theory in the classroom. In the real world, there are often problems with "satisfying" the requirements of an LC on the side of the sender (seller), and the receiver (buyer).

If an LC is irrevocable (meaning the credit cannot be amended or canceled without the agreement of all parties) then the buyer may have a big problem if something develops that they cannot fix - because the 3rd party will be obliged to pass the money to the seller once the goods are landed.

"Letters of Credit are guarantees of payment to help you make purchases or transact business with companies with whom you have limited trading experience or credit history."

Effects on
Branding
In this article, Prof. Richardson is discussing the challenges of developing a "Canadian Brand" for the clothing industry. In addressing this formidable challenge, Richardson explains that the ability to do this depends on how we can deal with the influences of the
  o  competitive environment
  o  social / cultural environment
  o  technological environment
  o  political / legal / regulatory environment
  o  economic environment
  o  geographic environment
Richardson explains that these environments make it difficult for Canada to consider having a global brand for clothing similar to the Italians or French, instead it is recommended that we "embrace" the extreme weather challenges of our geographic environment and "brand" Canadian clothing as being the most robust and strong for cold weather.

Outsourcing and Offshoring

why 99.9 accuracy is not enough
when you manufacture a large number of devices

99.9 means 1 in 1,000 is faulty
if you increase the number manufactured, you increase the number of faulty products
99.9 means 10 in 10,000
or 100 in 100,000

many electronic devices and their component parts are made by the millions
Various sources say iPhone production averages about 200 million in the past 4 years

if you say that Quality Control is aiming for 99.9%, then when it is applied to 200 million, the potential number of devices with errors or problems is... see below

99.9 accuracy equals 1 in a 1,000
or 10 in 10,000
or 100 in 100,000
or 1,000 in 1 million
or 10,000 in 10 million
or 100,000 in 100 million
or 200,000 in 200 million

99.9 means 1,000 in 1 million

Foxconn in China can regularly produce 500,000 iPhones a day - that means, mathematically they have, potentially, a risk of producing 500 faulty devices each day

Samsung regularly sells over 400 million phones a year - that is 400,000 faulty phone
400,000 is an enourmous potential for "ticked off" customers.)

"Takeaways" for the course MRK460 Global Business and Marketing
.
The 4Ps and the 6Es have to be worked on by the business such that you don't get too much emphasize on some versus other, for example do not focus too much on Price and ignore developing the Product (FABs)
youtube.com/watch?v=70wMAXToV4Y
6Es, one of the reasons you want to focus on ALL 6 of the 6Es, is so that you do not end up in an "unrecovorable mistake"
youtube.com/watch?v=Ykj0lxsQFmA

The Competitive Environment is slightly more important than the other 5 environments - mostly because business people tend to "miss" identifying the wide range of other enterprises that are direct and indirect, and future competitors.

Potential Disadvantages of Exporting  witiger.com/internationalbusiness/disadvantages.htm
Why would you discuss Disadvantages of Exporting in a course which spends most of the time discussing how to export?
For the purposes of saving money and running the company efficiently, sometimes it is better to NOT GO
- that is to say NOT export because the cost might be too high, or you may be consuming resources you don't have
- it might be better to concentrate on making money on your "regular" business.

Deciding NOT to export doesn't mean your company is not involved in international business

you can still be involved in importing, directly, or indirectly

Quality TQM JIT why 99.9 accuracy is not enough
when you manufacture a large number of devices
 witiger.com/internationalbusiness/TQM.htm
 witiger.com/internationalbusiness/JIT.htm
99.9 means 1 in 1,000 is faulty
if you increase the number manufactured, you increase the number of faulty products, 99.9 means 10 in 10,000 1,000 in a million/
When you have many large global companies making products in the millions, you have a potential of thousands of unhappy customers.

Foxconn in Zhengzhou in China can regularly produce 500,000 iPhones a day
- that means, mathematically they have, potentially, a risk of producing 500 faulty devices each day
500 per day x 365 days = 182,500 - which appears to be a very high number for potentially unhappy customers.
