| Reconcile these two sets of contradictory statements, and you might become a successful writer. |
| 1.
Writing is a solitary activity. Writers are loners who by their nature
are drawn to the sidelines, where they can better observe and make sense
of the parade of life as it tootles past them.
Writers communicate better on the page than they do in person.

2. Writers must sell their book as if it were a box of soap and sell themselves as if they were politicians. If they want anyone to read their work, and surely if they want to make a living as a writer, they must charm strangers and make people they might otherwise ignore feel friendly toward them. They often must aggressively go against their own nature and violate their own privacy. |
